OPUNAKE REQUIREMENTS.
POSITION IN REGARD TO DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. The question of establishing a district high school at Opunake was before the Education Board at its meeting on Wednesday. While the board's representatives who waited upon the Minister and Departmental officers in Wellington stated that, provided the Department was assured of a sufficient and regular attendance, there would bo no difficulty -in getting the school established, the schedule of names sent in from the district did not contain the requisite number of holders of proficiency certificates. The board felt, therefore, that it had been placed in a somewhat false position, as it had been led to believe that there would be sufficient qualified students to secure the establishment of a district high school. It was decided to inform the Opunake Committee that in view of the small number of present holders of proficiency certificates in the list submitted, the board was not justified in applying for the establishment of a district high school. i It was further resolved : That in view of the special circumstar, fs, on account of the isolated position of Opunake and on account of the requisite number of proficiency certificate-holders not being obtainable, the Department be urged to (jive special consideration to the establishment of a district high school at Opunake.
