CUTHBERT SHIELD.
WON BY ICAPONGA. The committee of the Taranaki Education Board, appointed to deal with the award of the Cuthbert Shield for the year, reported yesterday that the following schools had been awarded marks as under: Kaponga 253, Oaonui 248, Mangatoki 244, Bell Block 244, Tokaora 243, Matapu 240, Norfolk 238, Waihi (Motunui) 237, Okaiawa 237, Huiroa 237, Kapuni 235, Mahoe 235. They therefore recommended that the Kaponga school hold the shield for the present year. Opportunity was taken to discuss the allotment of marks for the Tisch Shield, which form part of those on which the award of the Cuthbert Shield is based, and it was recommended (1) that the allotment of marks be made only to schools where a fair amount of an approved plan has been achieved. (2) That the general design should be prepared by the agricultural instructors after consultation with the school committee and
head-tencher. The position of new school buildings should accord with the general design. (3) That the marks for the Tisch Shield be allotted by the inspectors and instructors in consultation. (4) That, as before, the marks be allotted at the end of the school year for the Tisch Shield and early in April for the Cuthbert Shield. (5) That a general reduction of 25 per cent be made in the present marks for the Tisch Shield as a basis for the allotment for the current year. The report was adopted, and it was decided to recommend that the inspectors and agricultural instructors consider the question of a system of grading schools for the two shield competitions, and report to the next meeting of the board.
