THE MERCHANT SERVICE.
A strong appeal is being made on behalf of the Missions to Seamen (Flying Angel), Auckland branch, by Mr Arthur P. Cowie, after 12 years' strenuous work in the port of Auckland. A large number of Auckland ladies have co-operated so as to promote the welfare of the men of the Merchant Service, and have promised their hearty support in organising a large fete, which is to be given in a shed on the Central Wharf in Auckland on 26th and 27th of this month. All interested in seamen are asked to contribute either articles for sale or donations, which may be addressed to the Missioner, Rew's Buildings, Queen Street, Auckland. Last year no less than 3037 bona fide seamen made use of the Mission Club room, and many letters of gratitude have been received from seamen and their friends thanking those responsible for the excellent time spent in Auckland. Mr Cowie also arranges for "evenings" where officers and engineers are able to get an introduction into private families. This movement is greatly appreciated by the men in question, as it helps to fill in a blank which so often occurs in the lives of seafaring men arriving in a strange port. Any gift for this purpose is acceptable.
