PROPOSED MOTUROA SCHOOL.

SITE APPROVED BY BOARD. At yesterday's meeting oi the Taranaki Education .Board, Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P., and P J. Wfc'te reportel, in regard to the site of a proposed school at Moturoa (Spotswood), that they visited and inspected ull the suggested sites, and after carefully reviewing the position, not only from the point of view of present requirements, but also as to future developments, and bearing in mind the need of a site as near as possible in the centre of the Omata and West End districts, they recommended to the board that application be made to the Department for a grant for the purchase of a site under offer, consisting of four acres, more or less, situated at the corner of Pioneer Road and Parris Street.

The senior inspector reported: The area from which was obtained the list of children is from P.ainsford Street westward. It includes Moturoa (in the vicinity of the New Plymouth Breakwater) and a locality named Spotswood. The site suggested is on Pioneer Street, and is at least two miles f>om the present West End School. The. distance will be greater when tie latter is moved to a new site. .The position is convenient for the residents of both Moturoa and Spotswood. Hardly any pupils would require to attend from a greater distance than one mile. The number of children on the list preserved is 189. Of these, 134 are of schoolnge. Of these, again, 107 are on the ro!l of some school. Most of them attend the West End School. The number of children of school age not attending school, the probability of the increase of the distance from the West End School, and the present necessity for travel by a road on which there is a great deal of traffic are adequate reasons why the provision of a new school should be favorably considered. There is, further, a certainty that the extension of the harbor works in the immediate future will cause a large increase in the population at Moturoa. This w»ll render necessary provision for a 'arg;r school than the one demanded by present conditions. Botli reports wer* adopted, and it was decided to prepare plans and make application to the Department for a grant for the erection of a school
