FALL DOWN LIFT WELL.
SAFEGUARDS REQUIRED.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A carpenter named Henry Lord was killed by a fall down the well of a lift in a shop in Queen Street. Alterations in the shop were being carried out, and the lift was being altered. Just before the accident a plumber passed the place where Lord was working at the top of the lift, and he noticed that Lord was lying down with his head projecting over the lift well engaged in driving a fourinch nail in the ceiling. He° did not appear to be in any danger of falling down the lift. Immediately afterwards he heard a crash and found that Lord had fallen down to the bottom of the lift well from a height of about 30 feet, A verdict of accidental death was returned, the coroner adding a rider that the statutory provisions did not call fol any safeguards during the construction of such works, but the evidence disclosed a danger to and the necessity for some further provision.
