BRITISH EMPIRE ORDER.
OFFICER DECLINES THE HONOUR.
Auckland, June 6.
The lengthy list of King's Birthday honors recently published contained the name of Captain D, C. W Cossgrove, who throughout the war occupied the position of Director of Recruiting, and who was responsible for the whole of the recruiting work in connection with the raising of reinforcements for the Expeditionary Force. Captain Cossgrove, in common with a large number of military officers, was appointed a Member of the OTder of the British Empire. He has now written to the Governor-General as fo'Jows: "Your Excellency,—l have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your Excellency's telegram of the 3rd inst., in which you ask me to accept Ihe hearty congratulations of her Excellency and yourself on the honor which his Majesty the King has graciously been pleased to confer upon me. In reply, I regret that I must decline the honor, and trust that your Excellency will take such- steps as may be necessary to nave my name expunged from the roll of members of the British Empire. My Teason for this step is that as the Government of New 7ealand saw fit to retain me compulsorily in New Zealand duripg the period of the war with Germany, thus refusing, to permit me to serve his Majesty in the field, I cannot accept a reward for doing what little lay in my power on home service in the Dominion. No honor that can be conferred upon me "will recompense me for the loss of seeing active service in the war of 1914-18. —I have the honor to be, your Excellency's most obedient servant, Dt 0. W, Gougwe-"
