STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
(All communications, leltsrs, etc, left ttitli Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) June 9.
About two years ago some of the ladies of Stratford opened in Dr. I'aget's Buildings, a women's rest room, and, with the exception of a short period during the epidemic, when it was closed, the room has served a mo3t useful purpose and has been much appreciated by ladies when visiting the town to do their shopping. The lire which destroyed the building of which the room formed a part early in May left the ladies who had control of the room without a place in which to carry on their useful work. The whole of the furniture, valued at about £SO, was destroyed, <ind as there was no insurance the loss was absolute. To resume the work will mean a good deal of expense, but there is a desire bo widespread to Lave tho room reestablished that Mrs. H. E. Abraham and other ladies have decided to take, the matter up. They cannot, however, hope for much success in their elTorts without pu"blic support, and those who would like to sec a women's rest in Stratford once more are requested to send their names and addresses, to Mrs. Abraham with an indication of the support they are prepared to give. In the past the expense of keeping the room in order has been very lighi, this work lmving been undertaken by Mcsdames Dixon, Crawshaw. and Douglas, who each had been in the habit of devoting one day in each month to the room. It seems very desirable that women visiting the town should have some place where thev can rest, and it. is to be hoped that the present movement, which concerns the country even more than the town, will meet with wide and generous support. Marsnret E. Close was further remanded at the Magistrate's Court this morning on a charge of having commit.ted manslaughter on an infant child. Mr C. D.
