Weir appeared for Messrs. C. L. Kaspar and J. Hawkins, licensee and owner, respectively, of the Rahotu Hotel.

Constable D. O'Neill, giving evidence, stated that the house was a very old one, and was in a rotten condition. The roof leaked, the windows required repairs, the balcony was unsafe, and the fire escapes and the doors leading to them were defective. Mr. Weir said it would cost £6OO to have the house put in proper repair, and the owner would not be justified in erecting a new building in view of the fact that a licensing referendum was being taken in November. The committee would not grant the renewal of the license while the building remained in its present condition, and the case was adjourned for three months. At the next meeting the committee would require plans for the complete restoration of the building, or in the alternative, plans for an entirely new building to be submitted. The committee also expressed a desire for the lease to be produced at the next meeting.—Abridged from th* Argus.

These would include the Railway, Dominion and Royal Hotels-, Hawera, and the two Waitotara houses. He hoped the licensees or owners would not overlook this matter.

Mr. G. H. Kyan, one of the counsel engaged, replied that when the licensing question was more settled there "was no dqubt that steps would be taken to rebuild many of the hotels.—Abridged from the Star.
