Hopkins, bookseller, vriU receive prompt attention.) | The Stratford Chamber of Commerce has decided to write to the Minister of Lands inquiring what action iias been taken with the opening up of 3000 acres in the Waro-Pouatu survey district. The Stratford Moderate League apparently intend to be a real force in de- I terraining public policy on the liquor question. The executive has been strengthened by the inclusion of new members, and the secretary has been asked to write to Wellington with a view to obtaining some of the latest literature on the liquor question as viewed from the Moderate League's point of view. The executive of the Chamber of Commerce has deputed the chairman to wait upon the local postmaster with the object of procuring for the residents of Stratford daily and direct telephonic communication with Wanganui. It was stated at the meeting that it is at present impossible to obtain direct communication with Wanganui between 9 a,.m. and 5 p.m. on business days. A young man who resides in the Douglas district was convicted at the Magisthate's Court on a charge of discharging firearms on a public road. The man was standing on - a load with a loaded gun, and, seeing a bird overhead, he fired and killed it. The bird proved to be a parrot owned by a resident in the vicinity. Sergeant Dale, who prosecuted, said that many people did not know that it was an offence to discharge firearms on a public road, and it was necessary to give publicity to the fact. Nurse Cramer, late of the Stratford hospital staff, has left to take up a posit'on as sinter in Auckland. Advice hast been received by Mr. Thos. Buss, of Opunake Road, that his son was sailing by the Tahiti, which left England on May 27A number of returned soldiers were welcomed home at a social at Te Wcra last week. The hall had been nicely decorated for the occasion and there was a good attendance. Mr. McElroy, who presided, presented each of the boys with a medal on behalf of the residents. Mr O'Neill, who also spoke a few words, referred to the fine record of the Flynn family. Mrs. Flynn, who was present, was, he said, to he congratulated on having had six sons who had served in the war. Lance-Corporal Curry returned thanks on behalf of himself and his comrades. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Stocklev, and extras were played by Miss Orudis. An excellent supper was served. During an interval iSapper Gerald Flynn sang ''The Deathless Army."
