LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL AND QUARTERLY MEETING. The annual und quarterly meeting of the Taranaki Licensing Committee was held at the courthouse, New Plymouth yesterday. Present: Messrs J. W. Poynton, S.M. (chair), E. P. Corkill, W. Ambury, ahd D. H. M'Donald,
NEW LICENSES. The following new licenses were granted; Maria MTJeen, Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth; Thomas Richards, imperial Hotel, New Plymouth Ernest C. Heel, Railway Hotel, Inglewood. THE INGLEWOOD HOTEL. David Martin Wilson, Inglewood Hotel, applied for a licence. The police report, which was read, called attention to a considerable number of dilapidations, sanitary requirements, etc., which required immediate attention.
Mr. A. H. Johnstone, who appeared for the licensee, stated that a large number of the items had already been attended to, while others were in progress, and the remainder would be seen to forthwith.
The chairman stated that it was wrong on the part of a licensee to allow his: house to get into such a condition. The trade enjoyed a valuable monopoly, against which there were obligations to the public to provide what wa9 necessary, not only for the reasonable comfort and convenience of guests, but also to protect them from firo and insanitation. In this case, the committee had decided that the question of the renewal of the licence should stand over until the next quarterly meeting, and in the meantime the police would be required to report as to the satisfactory carrying out of the details of their requisition.
THE TERMINUS HOTEL. [ Applications were received in respect of the Terminus Hotel, New Plymouth, from Rebecca Tabor, the owner, and S. Ridgley. The reports of the Health Inspector and the police, which were read, were strongly condemnatory of the building, i)nd the committee decided to adjourn |he applications foi three months, the Chairman intimating that in the event of the licensing poll favoring continuance a licence would riot again be issued in respect to the hotel, which would have to be rebuilt. Mi-. Billing said Mrs. Tabor, the owner, proposed to take the hotel over. If the dealing with the applications was held over as proposed complications.' might arise. The chairman said the committee had no desire to inflict hardship on anyone, and the point raised by Mr. Billing would be met by the adjournment of the present meeting until the 19th inst., when the committee would deal with both applications, RENEWALS GRANTED.
