PERSONAL.

The President of Portugal has resigned. The Rev. T. Tait, of Manaia, who has been ill for some time, is improving. Mr E. F. Blundell underwent an operation for appendicitis on.Wednesday and is progressing favorably. Cr. R. H. Piggott (chairman) was yesterday elected to represent the Clifton County Council at the forthcoming conference of the Councils Association.

Mr R. Gilbert, of Hurworth, received a cable from his son, Captain C. 0. Gilbert, R.A.F., stating that he and his; wife left by the Prinzessin, which will arrive early in July. Mr. T. C. Logan, Hastings, was appointed bridge carpenter to the Clifton County Council yesterday, in place of Mr. W. H. White, who declined to take up the appointment. Miss Florence Duthie, daughter of Mr. D. W. Duthie (general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand) and Mrs. Duthie, was on Wednesday married to Major Norman Abbott, M.C., of Trentham Camp, and formerly of Bendigo, Victoria.

At Manaia on Monday evening, a number of friends of Mr. W. F. Stevens assembled to bid him farewell on his leaving to commence business on his o»n account in Hawera. Complimentary remarks were made to Mr. Stevens' courtesy and hiß many acts of kindness. The death occurred yesterday of Mr W. Elliott, who for some years past has been in the employ of Messn. Ambury Bros. The deceased had been indisposed for four or five weeks, but was able a few days ago to come into town for a while. Early yesterday morning, however, he had a heart seizure, which proved fatal. He leaves a widow and eleven children. The death occurred at Manaia on Thursday of Mr. Thos. Sadler, an old resident of the district. He was born in Staffordshire, and was 74 years of age. He came to New Zealand 43 years ago, arid had been engaged in farming pursuits at Auroa. Mrs; Sadler died some, years ago. There is no family.
