I A police investigation into the I damage to the plate glass windows of ■ Charles Shalfoon'a thop resulted in the discovery of a revolver bullet, a man's cap, and a glass bottle inside the broken j window. The owner of the cap has been identified. Evidently the revolver was fired at the window at short range and the bottle used to enlarge the hole. In Ms eici<iement the culprit apareritly fell through the window into the shop, and forgot to recover his cap and bottle when making hia escape. PROGRESSIVE WHAKATANE. Whakatane, last Night. The Mayor, at the reunion of the Returned Soldiers' Association last night, foreshadowed Whakatane borough loan proposals to the extent of £60,000 to £70,000 for water supply!, electricity, drainage, roads, and footpaths; and this, with the county- loan of £BO,OOO which it is now proposed to borrow, will total about £150,000 for public worka in this district. [Mr. F. Amoore, late of Eltham, is the new Mayor of Whakatane.] SETTLING SOLDIERS ON THE. LAND. Whakatane, Last Night. There is muoh indignation at the delay in settling the soldiers on the land. At the Whakatane County Returned Soldiers' Association reunion, at which about 100 were present, M. Douglas complained that, although the Woodlands Estate at Opotiki ia ready, no soldiers were being settled there yet. W. C. Roberts, president of the Whakatane Agricultural Association, said that the Government appeared to be tied hand and foot by rod tape. He advocated local boards for Bottling soldiers on the land. It was resolved: That this meeting ttronglv urges upon the Government the Becessity of quickly opening up the various lands in this country for settling returned soldiers. WAtKAREMOANA SCHEME.

Napier, Last Night. At a meeting of the Waikaremoana Hydro-electric League it was decided that bodies connected with the league send their delegates as a deputation to wait on the Government and .press the district's claims. Mr. J. W. Brown, M.P., said that if the deputation failed ho would be prepared to move a vote of no confidence iu the Government. A WANGANUI CABNIVAL MEETING. Wanganui, Last Night. The Agricultural Society is making efforts to promote an annual carnival week in Wanganui, the intention being to hold the Jockey Club and Trotting Club meetings, Autumn Show, regatta, sports gathering and competitions, as well as arranging for evening entertainments. Tonight a deputation waited on the Jockey Club with a request that the club should, if possible, fix the dates of the February, meeting a fortnight earfier than usual. The
