PERSONAL.

_ The earliest Buller pioneer, Mr William Sloan, died on Saturday at the age of eighty-one, after a brief illness. Mr. R, Pepperell has been advised that his son, Private C. E. Pepperell, is returning on the troopship Waimana, arriving at Auckland on June 20. Mrs. T. Willing, Bell Block, has received advice that her son, Private T. E. Willing, is returning by the Waimana, due about June 20.

Mr. C. P. Boulton, Carrington Road, ihas received word that his son, Rifleman F. W. Boulton, is returning on the Waimana, due in Auckland about June 20. Mr. S. Hooker has received advice that his son, Driver H. W. Hooker, ol' the 13th Reinforcements, is returning by the Waimana, due in Auckland about June 20.

Mr. J. A, Auld, of Eginont Village, has been advised that one of hia sons, Ted, lands with a returning draft by the Waimana, due in Auckland on June 20.

Major (temp. Lieut.-Colonel) Ivon T. Staadish, Q.H.G., D.5.0., Royal New Zealand Artillery, has been appointed Director of Artillery (field) and officer commanding the regiment of Royal New Zealand Artillery. Mr. J. White, an old resident of Hawera, is leaving there to take up his residence in Auckland. He was the recipient of a presentation from his friends on Tuesday evening. The death occurred at Hawera on Tuesday of Mr. M. J. Goodson, a well-known North Taranaki settler, a prominent sportsman, and owner and breeder of many good horses. He married a daughter of Mr. Jas. Connell, who, with a family of eight children, is left to mourn her loss.

The death occurred at Nelson yesterday, in his 92nd year, of Mr John Sharp, one of the earliest residents of Nelson. He came to New Zealand in 1843 as clerk to Sir Francis Dillon Bill, and for some time waß a surveyor under the New Zealand Land Compajiy. in,, Nelson province, and later clerk to the superintendent and residential magistrate. He sat in the provincial council fori Waimea West and Amiri, being for three years provincial treasurer. In 1875 he was returned as one of the members for Nelson City in the House of Representatives, sitting for one Parliament. The late Mr. Sharp was later appointed resident magistrate at Nelson, Qnd, on retiring, entered business. He was Mayor of Nelson from 1888 to 1890.—Press Assn. J
