The Afghan regulars, being well armed and well equipped in every way, are formidable adversaries. The British concentration east of Ithybcr Pass is proceeding steadily. The Amir's attempts to raise the border tribes has generally failed, though there is some wavering owing to desertions from the British disbanded Khyber Rifles. The British representative at Kandahar has reached Ouietta. He says a jehad is being vigorously preached.— Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. AFGHANS ENTER WAZIRLSTAN. FAINT-HEARTED ATTACKS. Received June 3. 8.30 p.m. Simla, June 1. General Nadir Khan pntered Waziristan tribal territory along three routes with Afghan regulars and 36 guns. Their attacks on our posts were faint-hearted and failed to make an impression, contenting themselves with long range sniping. Evidently thev are uncertain on which side the Waziris' sympathies lie. The nine-pounder guns used by the Afghans in recent skirmishes have very little destructive effect. There is no chance of the enemy reaching Bannu or Knhatt.
Our concentrations are proceeding rapidly. Tha Afghan troops fled from Rivkof. Our advanco continues. Meaaures have been taken to punish villagers at L'tmanzai, twenty miles from Peshawar, where the ringleaders of a dangerous intrigue were arrested.. This had a quietening effect in Peshawar—Reuter. AMIR'S LOYALTY TO BRITAIN. London, June 2. Official.—The Amir of Afghanistan has sent the Viceroy a letter asking for peace and declaring that he never intended to sever his friendship with Britain.
