MIDHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent) Messrs Old and Stronlck, returned soldiers, have now got their eteam hauling and logging plant at work at Mr Scliuraark's farm on tho Beakon.sfleld Road, and have undertaken a considerable area of clearing in the locality. The presence of this enterprising firm In the district is a great boon to farmers requiring land clearing, and everyone wishes the soldiers every success in their venture. Owing to several cases of diphtheria the school will be closed on Monday instead of Friday next, when the winter holidays commence. The Soldiers' Farewell and Welcome Homo Committee have arranged a concert and dance for Wednesday next to welcome several recently returned soldiers, and have been fortunate in securing exceptionally good talent for the concert programme. The- weather, which was somewhat severe in the early part of last week, has now taken a turn for the better,-and the cold frosty nights are followed by warm sunny days, both of which are undoubtedly beneficial to the lani Cattle are looking exceptionally well, and abundance of winter food is In evidence on tho majority of the farms, substantial haystacks being quite a feature of tto landscape In thU locality. LEPPERTON. (From Our Own Correspondent) Miss Mouat, who for the past three years has been assistant Mistress in tho local school, left on Friday to take up a similar appointment at Hillsborough. During the afternoon Mr Dickenson, chairman of the school committee, on behalf of the headmaster and scholars presented Miss Mouat with a beautiful hand" bag as a token, of their regard. A bouquet,. charmingly arranged and presented by Mrs H. B. Lepper, was also handed to Miss Mouat. Mr Brown, the headteacher, voiced the regret of himself aud pupils at losing from the school a teacher at once so capable and winning. In the evening Mesdaraes Blackball and ft. Giddy entertained Miss Mouat and a number of young people in the hall, wherb a most enjoyable time was spent, almost everyone .present contributing to a programme, which was interspersed with dancing. Miss Mouat. was presented by her friends with a manicure se*» and suitably responded. The Bell Block and local hoys had a tussle on the Lepperton football ground on Saturday, and the game, which resulted in a draw, was very exciting—almost too furious at times. A return match Is to be played at Bell Block nest Saturday.
An energetic band of "workers have lately been engaged at the public hall in laying dow.i a concrete path and making other improvements, and their work will, no doubt, be greatly appreciated when the annual ball comes off on June 10th.
Miss Openshaw is organising a concert *o take place on June 19, in aid of the New Plymouth Nurses' Memorial Hall, and has enlisted the aid of Mr Sturrock, who has consented to assist himself and •to bring a party of New Plymouth performers. Given a fine night, an enjoyable evening's entertainment should result In a good sum being handed over to a most worthy cause.
