On flie motion of Mr. H. R. Billing (Weston and Billing), probate of the will of the late Mr. Thomas Furlong, senr., was granted on the 27th ult. by the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, to the executor under the will.

At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki County Council a new by-law was passed, subject to confirmation, which in uil'iict amounts to a tax on all vehiculai traffic on the county roads. The fees to be charged ranged from 10s per annum tor a gig or sulky to £o for a fiveseated motor car and £ls for a motol omnibus. Provision is made for half fees for half-yearly licenses.
Reference was made at yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki County Council to accidents caused through negligent driving of motorists, and after a short discussion it was decided to forward a remit to the County Associations' Con ference dealing with the matter, and also with the matter of control for motor driven vehicles generally. This evening in the Good Templar Hall an illustrated lecture will be given by Mr D. N. MacDiarmid, who has recently been engaged in war work in Egypt, Palestine and the Sudan. A number of slides descriptive of the desert will be shown and Mr MacDiarmid will also speak of the present situation in the Sudan. His Worship the Mayor wiH preside at the lecture. According to General Peyton C. March, American Chief of Staff, the German Army, which was officially 4,500,000 men at the Armistice, is now 820,000; the Austrian Army, 2,230,000, now . 80,000; the Bulgarian, 500,000, now 120,000; the Turkish, 400,000, now 20,000.
"A Wayfarer," writing in "A London Diary" in the Nation, sayt:—"While Mr Asquith was abroad he suffered the grosa indignity of having his letters opened and examined the Censor. A strance agahk.i, this outrage, addressed to the War Office, produced neither remedy nor apology," A notice in Thursday's Gazette regarding a proposal to use a piece of land at Trentham for prison purposes has given rise to the erroneous impression that the Terrace, Gaol is to be moved to the camp site. The Prisons Department explains that the proposal is part of the modern system by which approved short-sentence prisoners will be employed on the land instead of being kept hi towns. A re-c!assification of the prisoners at present confined in the Wellington gaols will be made, and suitable cases will be sent to work on the prison farm at Trentham. In addition to his usual stock salo in the ICaponga yards on Friday next, Mr. Newton King will submit to auction a first-class dairy herd of 30 Shorthorn, Holstein, and Jersey cows, on account of Mr. E. Maindonald.

At Monday's meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council the town cleric submitted returns dealing with the position of the £42,000 and £3OOO street loans. The second return shows that there is not sufficient money available in these lojms to complete the works authorised to be charged thereto. The work to be completed is estimated to cost approximately £4239, whilst the balance of loan monies only amounts to £2069, showing an estimated deficiency of £lfi7o. This deficiency is due to the expenditure exceeding the estimates. In regard to the £IO,OOO stretts loan, the only street completed is the Frankley Road. The estimated Co3t was £419, and the total cost to date £SOO A schedule also sets out the works authorised but not yet completed, together with plant, etc., authorised to be purchased. This shows an authorised expenditure in connection with streets of £6383 Is 9d, to which must be added the anticipated defiqiency upon the £42,000 and £3OOO loans amounting to £IO7O 2s !ld, making a grand total of £8053 4s 6d Farmers who want a leasehold dairy farm as a going concern should read W. The New Plymouth Borough Council last night passed a resolution asking the town elerk to report on th» matter of a scheme of superannuation for oouacil employees. At the annual meeting of the Egmont A. and P. Association on Saturday the committee's recommendation that an autumn show be held was carried after some discussion. The Minister of Education has obtained Cabinet's approval for a substantial grant for the erection of a school at Tawhiti, on the recently acquired site; also a grant for the erection of teacher'-} residence at Norfolk Road. The steamer Devon arrived in the stream at Lyttelton at G a.m. yesterday, from Newcastle. The vessel has nineteen soldierß on board for the Dominion, including Major J. B. Hine, M.P. She has been declared a clean ship, but will undergo twenty-four hours quarantine.—Press Assoc.
A Press telegram from Palmerston North states that a conference of local bodies set up a committee yesterday to report on the feasibility of arranging for shipping to Foxton, or, as an alternative, purchasing a steamer. An important sale of town property has just been completed in Hawera, the Egmont Hotel - property, together with the shops of the Melbourne Clothing Co, Mrs. Stewart's, Russell's stables, and Egger's grocery shop, being Sold by the Biddiford Estate to Mr. P. C. Gormley. The total amount is stated to be in the region of £40,000. Mr. Snelling, of the Buick Taxi Garage, has received telegraphic advice that the party which left New Plymouth on Saturday for a tour of the North Island reached Napier on Sunday afternoon, and yesterday afternoon had. reached Tarawera.
At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council the question of the people's milk supply was referred to by the Mayor, who reported that while In Wellington he had inspected the city's depot, where the milk, supply was received and sent out from. He thought the matter was one worthy of the council's serious consideration, and it was resolved to refer the question for consider ation to the committee set up to go into the housing problem. The annual general meeting of the Taranaki Farmers' Insurance Company was held at Eltham on Saturday. There was a good attendance, Mr. H D. Forsyth, chairman of directors, presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following were appointed' to the directorate: Messrs. W. D. Powdrell, J. Christoffel, C. J. Belcher, Jos. Best, S. Death, junr., E. Maxwell, and R. Lambie. Owing to his approaching departure from New Zealand for America, t Mr. Forsyth said he was unable to accept office, and his resignation was accepted with regret. A hearty vote of thanks to him for past services was carried unanimously. At a subsequent meeting of directors, Mr. J. Christoffel was elected chairman.—Star.
