Writes a correspondent:—As an indication that the old pleasant pastime of riding parties has not altogether given ? away to the car, a party of ten, compris- i ing some of the young people of Puke- ' aruhe, and visiting friends from Wellington and New Plymouth, organised a riding party on Friday last. Favored, probably by the most perfect day this year, and splendid tides, the party left Pukearulie about 10.30 a.m. The first post of interest was the stone marking the spot where the Rev. Whiteley was killed, and on the rise above, the old officers' quarters, where Major Gascoine and other;; were massacred. Then on down through the cutting, that skirts the Wttikaramma stream, which winds its course through a beautiful clump of native bush, on past the favored Horseshoe (Paratawhiti) grove, down to the beach. And what a beach, with its lovely stone ledges and fishing rocks! What would Ngamotu not give to pop it down in New Plymouth. Then along the beach for about two miles;, bringing you right under the famous White Cliffs. This magnificent landmark, rising almost perpendicular from the beach for about six hundred feet, gives one who is a lover of Nature in its rugged splendour quite a thrill. Then, continuing along, one comes to the Paraninihi tunnel. It is about five chains through the hill, and to the unwary a great source of danger to their clothes and boots:.
