A DECAYED MAST. CAUSES LOSS OF MAN'S LIFE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Wellington, Last Night. At the inquest on Waldemay Lepin, killed on Thursday afternoon through a mast of the Baden Powell breaking and falling on him, the evidence showed that the mast was decayed, but it was impossible to detect the fact from the outside. The master of the vessel considered the masts of vessels should not b; painted. The coroner returned an open verdict, there being no evidence of negligence on the part of any person engaged in working the cargo. DEATH IN GAOL. Napier, Last Night. The man John Peat, who was admitted to hospital yesterday from Napier Gaol, died at noon to-day. It is; supposed that he died of cerebro spinal meningitis, but the cause of death will not be established until bacteriological examinations, which are now being made, are completed. An inquest will be held. BURIED IN GRAVEL PIT. Morrinsville, May 29. A young man named Edward Arthur Parkinson, son of Mr. T. Parkinson, of Motumaoho, who was working for ihe Pinlco County Council, was killed by a fall of earth at the County Couneil pit yesterday. He was seen going with a team to the pit in the morning, and was found buried in the evening under a quantity of dirt. Deceased was a returned soldier, about 20 years of age, and was only recently married.
