EVERYBODY'S. TVfAXTNE ELLIOTT IN "FIGHTING ODDS." .Tin's picture marks Maxine Elliott's first appearance on the screen. Many tempting offers have been made to induce her to reconsider her refusal to act for motion pictures and finally she agreed to appear for Goldwvn in at least one picture mainly in order that her talent may be recorded in ;.ncli a way that the stage cannot give. Naturally the producers have spared nothing to secure a suitable subecjt for such a star and in "Fighting Odds" this opportunity was found, although it must be confessed not even this; picture displays all her great ability at its best. "Fightin? Odds" is the story of a young business man who has succeeded in a large way as a manufacturer, largely through co-operative ideas suggested 'by his wife. He disregards her advice, combines \yith monopoly interests and is made the sacrificial victim to their greed. He is framed by getting his signature to a doctored statement of financial resources and gaoled, while the real villain escapes. The wife r.ow undertakes to rescue him and punish the guilty. She does so by using sex influence, and she goes to the villain's rooms at midnight to get the incriminating papers, finally j obtaining justce and releasing her husband. This fine picture drama is showing in New Plymouth to-day anil tonight only.

THE PEOPLE'S. "THE GUILTY MAN." 'The Guilty Man" is the title of the new picture to be screened at the People's, commencing to-day at 2 p.m. The picture, which is notable as being Thomas Ince's first special Paramount production, is an adaptation from A. H. Wood's; successful play of the same name. The story deals with the hie of ,Claudine, a girl whose early lite, spent among sordid surroundings, affects the whole course of her life. Her parentage is hidden from her until one day she becomes involved in a street brawl and discover;. 1 that these disreputable people were responsible for her shadowed life. Vivian Reed is said to moke a telling figure as Marie Dubois. The part of Claiuline is taken by Uloria Hope, who is assisted hv William Garwood, Charles French, anil John Stoppling. Other films to be shown in support are Bur'on Holmes Travelog and 'The Eagle's Eye," Xo. 4. This programme screens finally on Monday night. "THE WOMAN GOD FORGOT."
