A STRONG OPPOSITIONS London, May 17. Mr. Asquith, in a speech at Newcastle, emphasised the inestimable advantage of a, compact and determined Opposition in Parliament; it was the essence of Parliamentary life. The artificial conditions of the December election had resulted in a top-heavy, unworkmanlike machine. A : coalition was often necessary in war, but [was wholly unsuited to the constructive tasks of peace. They must have a speedy return to healthy, political and parliamentary conditions. —Aus. and N.Z Cable Assoc. PEOTEST AGAINST CABLE DELAYS. London, May 17. The Manchester Chamber of Commerce has protested to the Board of Trade against the heavy cable delays, it taking between twenty and thirty days to get replies from India and China, rendering business almost impossible and nullifying the abolition of trade restrictions.—Aus: and N.Z. London, May 17. The Weekly Dispatch says that if General Haig -declines the command in India the choice will be made between Ceneral Birdwood and General Rawlinsen. The former is also mentioned for the Governorship of New Zealand, after visiting Australia in about the autumn. —•United Service.
