A DASTARDLY DEED. INMATES' NARROW ESCAPE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, May 29. I About 2 o'clock this morning residents of Greymouth were awakened by a terrifying explosion. It proved one of the most dastardly deeds perpetrated in the Dominion for many years. High explosive was placed in the house ofSeniorSergeant Simpson, of the police force. The house resembles a building that has been bombed. Sergeant Simpson says he was awakened by the explosion, the swaying of the building, and the sound of falling glass. The kitchen was a scene of chaos, the walls being shattered. Solid shelves weTe torn out of position and the windows blown clean out. MrsSimpson and an infant were sleeping in a room adjoining, and were saved from the force of the explosion by a cupboard in the kitchen-bedroom wall. The charge was evidently placed at an angle forward of the kitchen chimney and wall. Htyii explosive was used. Tt shattered the bench and sink and splintered the chimney. The charge was fired by a time fuse. A large charge was used. The inmates escaped injury. Mrs. Simpson is .suffering from shock.
