'PEOPLE MAROONED ON PACIFIC ISLAND. GALLANT ATTEMPT AT -RESCUE. Received May 29, 8 p.m. San Francisco, May 17. Captain Eidswag, of the barquentine Altu, from Melbourne, reports a South Sea mystery. He discovered unknown castaways on Flint Island, in the Polynesian Group, where he was blown by F.torms. He made a futile attempt at rescue, trying to reach the marooned people in a lifeboat, which capsized in tho swift tides among thg treacherous reefs. He was forced to tail away two days later. The attention of the Alta's crew was attracted by fires on the island, whereon several personw were discernible. Flint Island is far out of the trade routes.
