WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent) May 27. The call for nominations for tlie positions of two councillors resulted in four candidates handing in their names: Messrs A. W. Ogle, T. Buchanan, C. H. Johnson, and E. A. George, and a poll will lie taken on Monday, Juno 2. As the election on Friday is the first election of a council for a considerable time, it behoves the electors to see that they put in men competent to deal with the position of the borough as it stands.' today.
A novel display, at least as far as Waitara is concerned, has been suggested to the proprietor of the Big Store by the proposed "Victory Ball," which if to be held as part of the peace celebrations. He has had a dark room prepared by blocking lip the windows, and illuminated it with electric light, so that anyone buying material, of which there is a large variety, may see what it would look like in the evening when the electric light is on. Messrs Borthwick and Co.'s employees were engaged for some hours last night in luading 4000 carcases o£ mutton and lamb on trucks to be sent to the freezing chambers at Moturoa. I understand that the freezing -works. 1 there have room for a few thousand sheep, and Messrs Borthwick and Co. have engaged the space, so as to relieve tlie congestion here, and allow them to continue killing until the liner,' which is expected here this. 1 week to take a shipment of mutton, beef, tallow, etc., makes space for them to carry on. •
