ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
INFANT'S DEAD BODY MUSD. ' By Telegraph.— Press Association, Christchurch, May 26. The dead, body of a newly-bora mala child was found by boys yesterday on the bank of tho Heathcote Biver. It wrb wrapped in a piece of blanket and placed in a sugar sack. The body b*d not been in tho water, but bad been in the sack some time, as decomposition had set in. There were rfo mark* of violence on the body. Christchuroh, Last Night.
An inquest on the body of a newlyborn child, found on the banks of the Heathcote river, was opened before the coroner, Mr. S. E. McCarthy. The coroner said the body was that of a male child, li had been dead four or five days. The child had lived, but probably when it died it ha 4 only been alive a few hours. The body showed no signs of violence and he could not assign any definite cause for the death. Exposure to the outside air Would be sufficient to kill it. The child was a perfectly healthy one, and the organs were all nor* mal. The inqueßt was adjourned. DEATH OF A RETURNED SOLDIER. Napier, Last Night. Heka Andrew, a returned toldier, was found in the lavatory of the Caledonian Hotel on Saturday night, with a fractured skull, and died in the hospital to-day. A man named Piatt was found to-day in the Terminus Hotel with his throat cut, and is at the hospital in a serious condition.
