FORWARD TO PETROGRAO.
SUCCESSFUL BRITISH ADVANCE. London, May 21. The War Office reports: Our troops, in conjunction with the river flotilla, advanced up the left bank of the Dwina to the south of Tulgas, taking 21 prisoners. It is believed they sank a Russian gunboat- The Russian cavalry distinguished themselves in this operation. A strong patrol of Russians on the 19th broke through the enemy's line on the Vaga, killing 20 and taking 71 prisoners. There were several determined patrol encounters in the Murmansk district. On the Wth, on the railway northward of Lake Onega, our troops drove back patrons and located the enemy's main defence line. The Bolsheviiks, in consequence of recent defeats, removed the commander and appointed a successor, who is presumably a more able leader. —Aus. TSZ. Cable Assoc. Copenhagen, May 20. Lettish troops occupied Riga and shot most of the (Bolshevik commissioners. The Esthonians. supported by Russians and Germans, are rapidly advancing between the Narva and Gdov, and have reached the lower part of the Luga river, 120 miles westward of Petrograd.
