(From Our Own Correspondent) May 20. The Eltham Athletic League will hold their sports meeting on King's Birthday (June 3) in Taumata Park, when a fine programme of events will be arranged. These are of such a wide nature that all tastes will he suited. The programme will include scven-a-side football match, and pedestrian, bicycle, and relay races. Nominations will close on Wednesday, May 28, with the secretary, Mr. A. ft. Mills, Eltham, from whom all particular.; may he obtained. There was a very good attendance at the C.K.M.S. cluhjrooms last night, when the debate that "The League of Nations will prevent war in the future" was onened by Mr. ft. D Gow and Mr. Astbiiry in the affirmative, whilst the negative side was expounded by Mr. J. IT. Skeat and Rev. R. H. Hobday. At the (•lose of these addres>:es Mr. W. A. Ourtei?, of Mangatoki, added hi« opinion, and the decision went to the affirmative on a close vote.

On Monday afternoon a little girl named Conny Edwards, whilst riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the .Mountain Road came into collision with a motor-car from New Plymouth. The child was knocked over, but fortunately escaped injury, but the bicycle was rendered fit for the repair shop. In justice to the motorist it should be mentioned lie was hardly to blame, the little girl furning into thp Mountain Road as the car was approaching. The members of the Eltham County Council to-day made a visit of inspection to several parts of the county. Returned soldiers belonging to Knox Church were tendered a social on Monday, several soldiers being present. Competition prizes were won bv Master R. Irwin, Sergt. W. Hill, and Cpl. P. Flavell. Vocal and other items were contributed by Mesdames Irons and Beesley, Miss D. Thompson, Messrs Beesley and Carter, Private F. Thompson, and Master Irwin.

Mr. Turnbull, formerly of the firm of Osborne and Turnbull, Hawera, has purchased Mr. Smalley's auction and land agency business. Efforts are being made to form a racing club here, and a meeting of those interested will be held early next week. The Golf Club intend holding a medal match competition next week. The Eltham Athletic League has appointed the following officials for the sports meeting being held at the Taumata Park on June 3:—Handicapper, Mr. A. Whiting; starter, Mr. J. Hawke; judges, Messrs G. W. Tayler, H. H. Judd, and J. Bodle; clerk of the course, Mr. H. H. Blake; timekeepers, Messrs F. Vincent and C. B. Martin; referee for football tournament, Mr. H. Nuttall; in charge of children's sports, Messrs 0. Mauley and H. Jackson; gatekeepers, Messrs W. Davis, A. Hindi, and Hook. Mr. Judd resigned the position of treasurer, and Mr. M. A. Whiteford was appointed to this position
