The acceptances received on Monday evening for the opening day (Thursday) of the Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting were very disappointing, fields averaging a trifle under nine per rac3, while the Wanganui Steeplechase and Century Hurdles have only attracted seven apiece; the Hack Steeplechase six, and the Connolly Handicap nine_ The Borough Handicap, with thirteen acceptors, will produce the best field of the day. The weather cleared up in Wanganui yesterday, bnt nothing of much importance was registered on the, tracks. Coalition and Yellow and. Black jumped the big fences well, and Arlington also went well until he reached the hencoop,

which beat him badly, but neither rider [nor horse was much the worse for the 'spill. Master Strowan was due on Tuesday evening, and is sure to start a warm order in the big Bteeples. Of the hurdlers, Euripoa and Seadown fenced as well as anything, but the schooling obstacles are very easy. Birkenvale and Demos have, bean showing great form lately, and are sure to earn stakes at the meeting.

It would not be surprising to see Pnlthogue and Master' Webster carry the bulk of the money in the Hack Steeples on Thursday.

Royal Park is talked of in ronacetion with the Kaitoke Hack Hurdlsw. Otuahu may run better than at Hawera also.

If anything beats Rewipoto fn 'the Connolly Handicap it may be Marqueteur. Tressida also looks very-fit, and is much favored in doubles.

A very poor tot figure in the Purua Hack Handicap. Cadet, Astinome, and Signorella are well handicapped. Sir Fisher has broken down and Chimera has been sent into winter quarters. Both were well fancied for their Wanganui engagements. A penalty of ? lbs brings KaWnkorc'* weight in the Borough Handicap up to 7.10. Bore piits up 10 lbs extra in the Wanganui Steeples, making his impost 10.0, and a similar penalty gives Minster !) t lO to carry in the Century Hurdles. The tracks are now in splendid order, and, provided the weather holds good, Thursday's races should be run under perfect conditions.
