MINE-SWEEPING.

GOOD RECORD IN NEW ZEALAND.

It says a good deal for Captain HallThompson (Naval Adviser to the Government) and Commander Keily (officer in charge of the mine-sweepers) that out of CO mines known to have been anchored iu New Zealand waters 47 have actually been accounted for. The authorities are now pretty sure that the seas are safe, as the fields laid down have been well swept quite recently during a spell of calm weather without any result. The assumption is that those mines not accounted for have broken loose from their moorings, and have exploded themselves on the rocky shores in remote parts of the coast In view of the big field of mines planted off Cape Farewell and North Cape by the Wolf the loss of only two steamers by mine action is considered exceptionally fortunate in view of the practically uninterrupted traffic over the course mined.
