NEW PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOLS.

MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools was held last night. There were [.•resent: Messrs E. P. Webster, H. Trimble, J. S. Fox, L. C. Sladden, F. Atkinson, and Dr. F. E. Fookes. Mr. Sladden was voted to the chair. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. Mr. D, Hutch en forwarded his resignation as a member of the board, on account, of his inability to give the necessary amount of time to the work.

The chairman stated that the board was indebted to Mr. Hutchen for the work he did during his term as chairman, and moved that the resignation bo accepted with regret, and that the board record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him to the board. Mr. Atkinson, in seconding the motion, said Mr. Hutchen had taken up the position at a critical time, and had a difficult task, which lie thought had been performed better than it would have been by any other member. Other members joined in the appreciation of Mr. Hutchen's services, and the motion was unanimously carried. It was decided to appoint Mr. L. A. Nolan to the vacancy on the board caused iiy the resignation of Mr Robertson. Mr. Sladden reported that he and Mr. Webster had gone into the matter of theheating of the Girls' School, to the effect that experiments were in course of being carried out, which, it was hoped, would be entirely successful. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the town members with power. to act.

A sub-committee was appointed to report on the question of additional accommodation at the boarding establishment at the Boys' School. The committee appointed on tie question of teachers' salaries was granted an e.vteimion of time in which to report. The Education Department wrote asking for a plan of the present school site and the proposed addition, before granting permission for the use of the £450 received from the Railway Department for the portion of the Manaia reserve for tlie purchase of an additional area. The Lands Department forwarded separate reports upon the various reserves under the board's jurisdiction, the cost of the reports being £7 10s, which the board was asked to remit to the Receiver of Lands' Revenue. It was decided to call the attention of some of the tenants to the matter of the spread of noxious weeds, and request that the blackberry should be coped with before January next. . It was decided to send a copy of each report to the respective tenants. Notification was received from the Registrar of the Vifctoria University College, Wellington, of an election to fill the vacancy on the College Couneil caused by the retirement of the Hon. J. (}. W. Aitken, to be held on June 7. The governing body of each secondary and technical day school in the college district has one vote for each 100 pupils (or part of 100), exclusive of any in the lower departments, in average attendance. It was decided that the chairman be authorised to call a special meeting, if necessary, for the purpose of exercising the board's vote. Accounts amounting to £1556 7 s 5d were passed for payment.
