A PECULIAR CASE.

CHIEF JUSTICE'S SIGNIFICANT ACTION.

By Telegraph— Press Association. Wellington, May 17. In regard to a comment upon the jury's finding in.the recent case made by the Chief Justice when Arthur James Ford appeared at the Supreme Court this morning for sentence on a charge of theft. Ford pleaded guilty this week to stealing certain articles from the Defence Stores, biit Thomas Evans, who was charged with him, denied the charge, and was found not guilty by the jury. Sir Robert Stout said that, in his opinion, Ford had spoken the truth when ho gave evidence at the trial against Evans, but apparently the jury had not believed him. Personally, he believed Evans knew perfectly well that F ?d left the store, where both were night watchmen, with some of the stolen goods. In the circumstances, he felt it to be an injustice to imprison Ford while the other man escaped, and, therefore, would admit Ford to probation for two months.
