Mr. R. H. Close, who has been working for the Hawera County, was the successful applicant for the position of county overseer ,to the Woodville County, out of nineteen applicants.

Before taking up his duties as Director of Administration, about the end of May, Brigadier-General G. S. Richardson, C. 8., C. M. G., will make a tour of inspection of the four military districts of the Dominion.

Mr. T. Ireland, late acting-.town clerk for the Borough of Ohakune, has been appointed cliiaf accountant of the Taranaki Building Society at Hawera.

Amongst .those returning by the transport Tofua, due at Wellington on the 27th inst., is Sister L. I. Cumberworth, daughter of Mr. Cumberworth, schoolmaster, of Mahoe.

Amongst those booked to arrive by the Pakeha shor.tly is the well-known sporting starter R. H. Skipworth, who lias been on active Bervjce for some eighteen months prior to the signing of the armistice.

Lieut. E. J. Butler, of Palraerston North, haß been appointed quartermaster of the hospital ship Maheno, which has been .taken over by the Imperial Government, and will probably bo engaged in conveying invalided troops to England from the East.

The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs C. H. Burgess) left for Wellington on Saturday to attend the Dominion Town Planning Conference. Mr F. T, Bellringer (town clerk) will also attend the conference. Mr. E. Whittle has been advised by the Hon. W. H. Herries, chairman of the Repatriation Board, that he has been appointed a member of the, New Plymouth Repatriation Committee as representing the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr H. Loveridge, of Hurford Road, has received advice that his son, Corporal A. P. Loveridge, is returning by the transport Pakeha, due at Wellington about 27, th March, 1919. Corporal Loveridge left with the 25th Reinforcements.

Another of Wanganui's pioneer settlers, in the person of Mrs. Tread well, passed away on Friday. The deceased lady, who wa9 tho widow of tho late Rev. James Treadwell, arrived in Wanganui with her hiißband in 1870. A family of three daughters and three sons are left to mourn their loss. The daughters are Mrs. Mclntyro and Misses J. B. and H. M. Treadwell, and the sons are Mr. C. H. Treadwell, barrister, of Wanganui, and Mr, J. H. Treadwell, farmer, of Eltham. The office-bearers and adherents of the Manaia Methodist Church met in the vestry recently to bid farewell to MiJoseph Asher, of New Plymouth, who has been on the Local Preachers' Plan for many years past, and who is about to leave the district for Matamata. The Rev. J. Nixon occupied the chair, and in a feeling speech eulogised the long and faithful services of Mr Asher to the Church in all parts of Taranaki. Words of appreciation and thanks were also added by Messrs E. Wills, H. J. Berry, S. J. Bennett, H. Sandford and R. Aro'a. Mr Nixon then presented Mr Asher with, a series of books as a token oi esteem and appreciation from the officers and local preachers of the Manaia Methodist Circuit. Mr Asher feelingly replied, expressing his gratefulness for many kindnesses received in the Manaia Circuit, and for the most acceptable gilt of books, which he would always cherish as a reminder of many old friends at Manaia. Supper was then handed round by, the ladies, and a most enjoyable meeting was brought to a close by the singing of the Doxology.—Witness
