WORK AND WAGES.
TEE WATERSIDE TROUBLE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, May 15. There appears to be a fairly good prospect of a settlement of the waterside dispute. The parties met again today, and the employers, whose recent offer of an increase of 2d' per hour was rejected by the waterside unions, made another offer. The terms of this offer have not been disclosed, but the tone of the conference is stated to have been amicable. The employers' first offer, rejected by the men, was to raise the waterside wage from Is lOd to 2s an hour. Presumably, the new offer is an advance on 2s, and its acceptances by the waterside unions will create difficulties >n other industries, particularly among the skilled trades. This point has been recognised by the employers, and it is known that much pressure has been brought to bear upon the eraployers of waterside labor to dissuade them from yielding to the demands of the men. l
