FOOTBALL.
The Rugby season opened in Auckland last Saturday. Chief interest centred in the match between University (last year's champions) and Grammar Old Boys, the attendance being estimated at 4000., Playing under the amended rules University ran out winners by 14 points to 3. Ponsonby had a keen contest with Grafton, the final score being in favor of former by 14 points to 11, College Rifles ran their total to 14 points, whilst their opponents—the Marist Old Boys—only gathered in 0 points. Parnell was at home to the Newton team, and whilst giving them a welcome trounced thein to the tune of 18 points to 5. The general rim of the play showed that the Aucklanders possess the material 'that should render, them good service in the representative games. At Auckland on Saturday 4000 people watched the Northern Union game between Maritime and Newton, and witnessed an excellent game, the final totals Itnimr Maritime 10, Newton IS. City (10) defeated North Shore (.?), and Grafton (2B) won easilv against Marist Old Boys (8), Tn the latter match Ifwerson was in splendid form, scoring three tries and kicking four goals. j
