WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, May 13. The advance agent for Chautauqua ;Miss Stanhope) has been in Waitara to-day trying to make arrangements to hold a Chautauqua season here next year. I gather she has had considerable success in getting guarantors to be responsible, for the £l5O, which is necessary before the company will include the town in its visiting list. Miss Stanhope anticipated getting the requisite number to-morrow. The resignation of Crs. Proctor and George leaves the borough without a council, as the Mayor and Cr. Jones cannot do any business by themselves. It is* to be hoped thaV a council will be elected before next meeting night; otherwise it will delay striking the usual rates for two months, which, in view of the state of the council's finances, would be a very undesirable state of affairs. Mr. W. Andrew, from whom the borough bought the electric light plant, is in Waitara to-day, having come down from Auckland, where he is in business. Subscriptions to the memorial hall in the new home built for the nurses at New Plymouth are not receiving the consideration which the cause deserves. So far, none have been received. The Waitara Seaside Society are holding a social shortly, at which the Tabor Shield and medals and the cups for the relay race and for the tug-of-war are to be presented.
