INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
THE MANUKA BERTHED. ANOTHER DEATH AMONG THE CREW. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. May 10. The Manuka (which has been quarantined since April 28), was permitted to berth this morning. The watcrsiders will not work the vessel's cargo until Monday; t It is reported there are two serious cases of influenza among the Manuka's crew on Somes Island. A second death among members of the crew of the Manuka occurred on Thursday night when John Sullivan, * aged 48, a single man who signed on as fireman at Sydney, died at the quarantine station on Somes Island from the effects of influenza. No further cases of influenza have occurred on tho steamer Kaimata, and the vessel, after being thoroughly fumi-. gated, was taken out to the stream yesterday, preparatory to sailing to-day for Westport.-
MINISTER AND CHRISTCHUROK DOCTORS. Christchurch, May Ift. As the result of a conference with the Hon. G. W. Russell over the payment of block doctors' fees, representatives of the local branch of the British Medical Association agreed to supply the Minister with the circumstances under which the block doctors operated in Christchurch ; also with proposals in regard to a recrudescence of the influenza epidemic.
AUSTRALIAN REPORTS-. GAINING GROUND IN SOUTH OF AUSTRALIA. Sydney, May 11. The resumption of racing and the opening of the football reason took place yesterday. There were good attendances, despite the prevalence of the "flu." The position of the metropolitan and country districts, both in New South Wales and Victoria, is steadily improving. There is reason to believe that the top of the wave has been passed, and that its infectlvity and virulence is declining.
South Australian reports show that it is gaining ground, there being an increasing number of death#, though tho death rate is not large Queensland reports indicate that since the fir;\tyoutbrevk it has been steadily spreading, there being many new cases. Brisbane, May 11. The strike haß rendered idle a number of inter-colonial steamers, which, however, will be allowed' to return to their home ports.-
