THE MINING DIFFICULTY.
1 - II I ' PROTEST AGAINST STOPPAGE. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Wellington, May 5. The Coal Mine Owners' Association has written to the Miners' Federation protesting agairfst the stoppages that occurred at all the mines on May Day. The agreement under which the mines are being worked provides that there shall be no stoppages outside the regular holidays. The loss of a day's production at the present time is a serious matter (for the general public. It -will be remembered that recently the mine owners wrote to the Miners' Federation demanding the observance of the agreement, which was signed last year by the Federation as representing the various miners' unions. This agreement, has been constantly violated by the miners, who, by a series of stoppages, ! have done much to intensify the coal shortage. The federation replied that the matter would be considered. No further reply has yet reached the mine owners. The situation is regarded by the employers as thoroughly unsatisfactory.
