STRATFORD.
'»■ mt ' (From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. HodUlus, bookselkv, will receive prompt attention.) May 5. On Thursday, May 115, the Town Hall has been pencilled for the grand concert and dance to be given under the auspices of the A. and P. Association. Two concerts have previously been given, and they proved so successful that the 900 members resolved to make the concert an annual function. The committee has been fortunate in securing the services of a small, but select, band of artists, who may be relied upon to submit a programme that should meet with universal approval. The vocalists include Miss Rennie Te Au, of Invercargill, a gifted singer who has established a reputation throughout the Dominion. Rev. Papapakura can -always rely on a good reception from a Stratford audience. Mr. Norman Day is always a favorite here, and the New Plymouth singer will find his popularity in no way diminished. Another popular vocalist is Mrs. C. McLaren, and she has the honor of being the only artiste from the district, and will be heard in several new numbers. Mr. A. 0. Sturrock (pianist) is also assisting, and bis numbers will certainly appeal to the musical. It is a. number of years since the writer heard Mr. George Swan, of Wanganui. As an elocutionist he is hard to equal, and if he can be prevailed upon to give the Dutch recitation on Conciliation, and also "Me and Bill," his audience will enjoy a treat. Mr. H. C. Duigan, of Wanganui, completes the list, and though last his items will be not the least meritorious. The committee has gone to considerable expense to secure the presence of these performers, and therefore merit a b«mpcr I house. At the close of the entertainment a dance will be held, an orchestra of the best having been secured that should All the hill. Details will be advertised this week.
To-morrow (Tuesday) evening the Toko Coronation Hall should find the floor taxed to the utmost capacity, the occasion being the welcome home dance teudered to five recently-returned soldiers. Messrs Were (chairman), Gernhoofer (secretary), J. -Kilpatrick, M.C, and the committee intend to make this dance the "best ever," and have secured the co-operation of the ladies, so it is safe to predict that all those who attend can rely on having a most enjoyable time.
"Land hunger" continues, and consequently many farmers are clearing out at good prices, and the others coming in are cheerfully paying the prices asked, fully believing that there's good money in the proposition for them. Out at Puniwbakau Mr. J. Jackson, after a residence of 15 years, has succumbed to the clearing sale fever and has sold his fine farm to Mr. J. Mcpherson, of Hunterviile. He is a returned soldier, and will have the best wishes of all in his new home. Mr. Jackson is undecided at preesnt as to what his future plans will be.
On ■ Tuesday afternoon the annual meeting of the Plunket Society will be held. Finances as shown in the balancesheet disclose a healthy state of affairs, the receipts for the year being including a credit 0f.£130 in April Expenditure showed thaj the furnishing of the Plunket Room cost £'24 Us 3d, and the salary to the nurse absorbed £164 lfls 3d. The statement of assets and liabilities shows that the former stand at £2OO 12s Sd and the latter £2 15s fid. Footballers in costume herald the near approach of the season, and to-day several sturdy youths from the schools were "mopping up" the idle moments in a useful practice on the Victoria Park. From what one can gather the Stratford Club and school should possess good average teams this winter.
There is a cold snap approaching. Don't bother about the breezes or the frost, but call at C. E. James' warehouse and look at the fine parlor games he has for the children, and for dad he has the best brands of cigars and also tobacco, with the best of pipes to smoke his favorite mixture. For mother there io a great variety of reading matter, so why not be cheerful and contented, and ajl for a L'ttle cost; but remember you lean get it at C- E. James'.—Advt
