Glorious weather prevailed for the first day of the Wellington Autumn Meeting, and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £34507 10s. Results:— FIRST HURDLES.—3 Yankee Jack I, 2 Papanui 2, 1 Multicipal 3. Also started: 4 Gwynne, 5 Royal Battery. Four lengths separated the placed horses. Time, 3min. 12 3-ssec. (an Australasian record). ST. LEGER STAKES.—2 Afterglow I, 1 Star Lady 2, 3 Almoner 3. The only .starters. Won by three lengths; two lengths between the next two. Time, 2min. (a record for the race). PLUNKET NURSERY HANDICAP.— 2 Red Pepper 1, G Some Kid 2, 7 Ermine 3 Also started: 3 Amythas, 1 Murihiku, 4 Night Raider, 9 Royal Exchange, 5 Chaeronia, 5 Maronne, 8 American Beauty, 8 Swanee River, 10 Vitella. Won by a head, a neck between the uext two. Time, lmin l-ssec. THOMPSON HANDICAP.-2 Sasanoff 1, 1 Spanner 2, 5 Rude 3. A perfect start. At the end of a furloiig Spanner led by two lengths, and at the five furlongs had increased the lead to four lengths. Entering the straight Sasanoff ran into second place, and won a splendid race by a neck, Rude three lengths off. Time, lmin. 38sec. (a record for the race and the course). CHALLENGE STAKES.—3 Warplane 1, 2 Affectation 2, 4 Printemps 3. Also started: I Gloaming. At the barrier Gloaming moved too fast and the tapes I threw him. Affectation led into the straight, where Warplane joined him. A good race over the last two furlongs resulted in Warplane winning by a neck, Printemps two lengths away. Time, lmin. 20 3-ssec. Gloaming was lame in front on returning to the birdcage. SILVERSTREAM HANDICAP.—2 The Speaker 1, 7 Pretty Bobby 2, 3 Warlike 3. The Great Metropolitan resulted: — Langtlon Hills 1, Furore 2, St. Tudwal 3—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. City and Suburban.—Royal Bucks 1, Arion 2, Dansellon 3. A Sydney cable states that the brood mare Lady Victoria, with a filly by Piquet, was passed in at the sales at 1650 guineas, and sold privately. The price is stated to be one of the highest ever paid in Australia for a brood mare.
