Lieut. G. A. Hayden is returning to New Zealand by the .P&kelia, which sailed from England on April 12. The death is reported by eable of Professor John P. Mahaffy, Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. The names of L, V. Hiekey (Opunake) and P. Whiting (Hawera) appear in the list of men returning to New Zealand by the Paparoa, which is due to reach Wellington 'about May 13.

Dr. Paris, district health officer at Dunedin, who has been transferred to Wellington, will be succeeded by Mr. D. B. T. Hughes, of Auckland. Mr. A. V. Slurtcvant, District Land Registrar for Taranaki, wiio lias been transferred to Dunedin, leaves for the south to-morrow morning. Lieut. Sidney (Burgess, who returned to New Zealand by the Bhamo, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train on Wednesday evening. Mr. MoVilly took over from Mr. Hiley yesterday the duties of general manager of railways. It is understood that Mr. Hiley will leave for England in June. Mr. Johnson, Devon Street west, iias been advised that his son, Private Harold N. Johnson, is returning by the Northumberland, due in Wellington about Mav 9.

The new Mayor of Tauranga is Mr. Bradshaw Dive, formerly M.P. for Egmont. He defeated his opponent by a hundred votes.

Mr_ C. A. Marchant, of Cardiff, a returned soldier, has been nominated to fill the vacancy caused by tbs retirement of Captain Spratt from the Taranaki War Relief Association.

Mr. P. V. Fraser, S.M., has bees appointed chairman of the Board of Appeal constituted under the Post and Telegraph Department Act, 1918. Mr. Eraser is also chairman of the Public Service Appeal Board.

The Hon. G. M. Thomson, M.L.C., of Dunedin, the well-known scientist, has recently been engaged on a tour of the North Island to gather information to complete his work on the naturalisation of animal and bird life of New Zealand, on which he has been engaged for several years. Dr. H. W. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, has been an inmate of the Mater Hospital, Mount Eden, for the past fortnight, says an Auckland exchange. On two days during the past week his condition was critical, but on Monday he showed a marked improvement.

Mr. Robert Bell, managing director of the Lyttelton Times Company, Ltd., who has been in indifferent health for the last four months, has left the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch. for the Rhodes Cgnvalesce.nt Home, Cashmere Hills. He will reside at the Convalescent Home for the next few weeks prior to leaving for America in the Moana, which is due to sail about the end of May. Mr. Bell will be accompanied on his trip to America by his voungest son, Mr Chas. Bell. :

Sergeant Nugent Welch, a prominent member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, returned from active service' by the s.s. Raranga on Tuesday last. While on the western front Sergeant Welch was appointed divisional artist, and has since completed in oils and water-colors a number of paintings of battlefield scenes in France. These works are eventually to be exhibited in the war section of the Dominion Museum. Several finely-handled watercolors painted in France during his absence will be shown at the annual sketch exhibition shortly to be opened at the Art Gallery. Brigadier-General G. S. Richardson, C.8., C.M.G-, late Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces in the United Kingdom, is aboard the transport Remuera, which is due at Auckland on Monday next. General Richardson is to be given a civic reception in Auckland. It has been announced already that General Richardson is to become Officer in Charge of Administration in Now Zealand, with rank immediately below the General Officer Commanding the Forces. MajorGeneral Sir A. H. Russell, who commanded the New Zealand Division from the time of its formation till its disbandment, is on board the Arawa, due to roach Lyttelton on May 12. He will go on leave after he reaches Wellington.

In the course of his address of welcome to General Hart at Carterton on Friday the Mayor stated that BrigadierGeneral Hart had, by a strange coincidence, served as a steward on board the Corinthie on. returning from the Boer war. On this occasion he had returned on the same vessel as Brigadier-General, 0.M.G., iDS.Q.
