NEW PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD.

MEETING OP BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools met on Monday evening. In the absence of the chairman (Mr. R. W. D. Robertson), Mr. L. C. SUxdden occupied the chair, and in addition there were present: Messrs F. W. Atkinson, A. Morton, H. Trimble, J. S. Fox, S. G. Smith, M.P., and Dr. E. F. Fookes. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. E. P. Webster.

The secretary to the Timaru High School Board wrote that it had been suggested by his board that it might be advantageous and of mutual benefit if a conference of high school board representatives could be arranged to discuss matters of general interest, especially in regard to capitation payments and teachers' salaries. An early reply was asked for in view of the proposed amendments to the Education Act, 1914.—1t was decided to reply that the board approved of a conference being held and would suggest that the Timaru Board convene one, to be held, if possible, during the session of Parliament. Mr. Smith, in accordance with notice given, moved that all existing subcommittees be dissolved, and that three standing committees be appointed, viz., agricultural, supplies house, and and finance and salary, the chairman to be an ex officio member of each. His object, he explained was to facilitate the work of the board and enable it to be carried out with the greatest possible efficiency.—The motion was carried. Messrs Atkinson, Morton, and Webster were appointed to the agricultural committee. The constituting of the other committees was deferred.

A special committee, consisting of the town members of the board and Mr. Trimble, was appointed to go into the question of salaries and report to the next meeting.

The headmaster of the Boys' High School drew attention in his report to certain requirements.

The appointing of a permanent physical instructor was referred to the committee set up to deal with salaries. Messrs Sladden and Webster were asked to take in hand the matters of paths about the new buildings, doors for science cupboards, locker accommodation, and racks for rifles, on the understanding that they should carry cut the work necessary at once and report to the board regarding the remainder.
