There was a large gathering of returned soldiers at the social, given by the members of the Egmont Club at their club rooms on Friday evening. Mr. N. J. King (president) briefly welcomed the guests, after which his worship the mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) and the chairman of the War Relief Association (Mr W. P. Kirkwood) gave short addresses in honor of the occasion. Rev. 0. W. Howard then unveiled two photographs of the late Private C. H. Potts and Motor Mechanic J. H. Batey, who lost their lives. After this ceremony the "Diggers" thoroughly enjoyed themselves with billiards and cards. Musical items and orchestral selections by Fox's orchestra ended one of the most ! pleasant evenings held at the club. Amongst the aspirants for the Hospital Board vacancies is Mr. R. H. f Cameron, who some ten years ago held a position on the Board for two years. •He succeeded Mr. Marchant as chairman, and it goes to Mr. Cameron'scredit that reforms that are still in existence were carried out. This week a welcome home social will be tendered at the Wharehuia schoolhouse to Trooper Wellington and Privates Kowish and Gu.ppy. The promoters have secured promises of items from several well-known performers. ; Mr. T Watkins, manager of the Tuna Dairy Company (cheese), has had his make register 01.63 and fills third plate | amongst (10 factories graded at Moturoa. The Tuna whey butter also secured second honors, which must be gratifying to the factory staff and suppliers. Stratford, April 28. On Thursday, weather permitting, the Gold. Club will open the season with a mixed foursome match. Returning soldiers appear to be on the train every evening. On Saturday the Mayor officially welcomed several men in khaki who disembarked. Members of the Harbor Board intend addressing ratepayers here on Tuesday evening, the- poll being held on Wednesday. Next Thursday,, at Midhirsi, the Settlers' Association intend holding their annual picnic and sports in the factory grounds. A lengthy programme has been .arranged, the items including competitions for the ladies and children, as well as for the men. If the climatic conditions are suitable, there is every reason to anticipate a financial success. Although shipping arrangements are far from being regular or satisfactory, Mr. C. E. James has been fortunate in landing some splendid sets of English china tea-sets, ranging in price from £1 18s to £2 2s 6d (21 pieces). Later on, dinner and other sets are expected. Thoße in need of tea-sets wouid be well advised to call and see Mr. James' shipment, which are unique in design and the prices are unapproachable.
