OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) At tha Magistrate's Court -on Thursday, before Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., three natives were fined 2s and interpreter's fee, sa, for neglecting to send their children to school. The Native Poke (Pungorehu) complained that his child . had been beaten for thieving, when it ! was proved that ho was not the thief. He also believed that the "color line" had something to do with his child not being attended to in his education. Another Native said he did not send his child because "he no learn nothings" A case of peculiar interest was M. J. Brannan v. P. Jarrett,. Plaintiff is the lessee of an education reserve lease, and gave ; Jarrett a tenancy of same at 2s Od per week. When Barton's Circus came along Jarrett charged the circus £1 Jor the' right to pitch their tent on the section, and plaintiff claimed tho fee from Jarrett, and got judgment for 10s, his Worship holding that defendant acquiesced | in the arrangement regarding the weekly tenancy and no further possesion rights. Mr. C. Sorrensen's was the only nomination for the vacancy on the Town Board created by the resignation of Mr. S. M. Cornish, There was no nomination for the vacancy on the Egmont Council At the Harbor Board meeting on Wed' . nesday afternoon the members were: Messrs T. P. Hugbson (chairman), i S. Campbell, M. Hickey, J. Conaglen, and S. M. Cornish. The clerk (Mr. O'Brien) was appointed official in charge of the > Opunake Wharf and signal man; The board has now taken over control of the "> jotty, and the Northern Steamship Com- ■ pany's boat will, in a fpvv weeks' time, resume its Opunake pott of call. The chairman, when in Wellington recently, tried to induce the shipping companies to put on a boat to take up the run from Wellington to Patea, Opunake, and Waitara or New Plymouth, but was unsuccessful. He hopes that it will be taken up later on. He also interviewed Mr.
Myers, Acting Minister of Finance, re- : garding loan proposals. The Minister courteously assisted him, and advised that the loan be put on the market six . weeks hence. The chairman Also interviewed Air. Cyrus Williams, the bottdk consulting engineer, at Lyttelton, alto the secretary and harbormaster at Timaru, and received valuable information regarding Opufiake'a uroposed harbor works.
