April 23. In closing his address last evening the -Mayor (Mr. J. W, .McMillan), referring to the term of office as Mayor of his opponent (Mr. J. W- Boon), stated that Mr. Boon had saddled the borough with that doubtful blessing the electric light concern, which was costing several thousands to put into repair, and was responsible for the proposal to erect tomb-stone-electric-poles combinations, also for electric light minimum charges. MrBoon was blamed for the abattoir property, on which thia year £ 160 had been spent and was not finished; for inakiDg the borough foreman a full-fledged engineer; for keeping empty absolutely the best and largest shop in the municiji;i! buildings, due to want of business common-sense; for allowing the electric light department to be carried on in a state of absolute chaos. Mr. McMillan maintained he was justified in these charge, concerning what Mr. Boon had done while in the mayoral chair.

Mr. Boon speaks to-night, and will doubtlesa reply to the allegations on his administration.

The electric light loan of £7OOO was carried yesterday by 244 to 65. This afternoon the Anglican congregation held a garden fete, the attendance being very good. Financial results are not yet known, but the various stalls appeared to do good business. Those in charge were Mesdames A. F. Grant and 0 Penn, produce; H. Good and E Ruthorfurd, work; W. J. Crawshaw and A. W. Budge, refreshments; Mrs. Ahraham and Rev. T- Partridge, games; Misses Young and Porritt, siveets. Nominations closed to-day for the council, and those seeking seats are Crs. R. VI. i.'amrron, S. B. Hunter, C. Jackson, T. Lawson, J. H.>Thonrpson, C. B. Walsh; Messrs AV H. Young, R. McK. Morison, and A. A.'Stewart (ex-councillors), and D. M. Clark, W- J. Newton, and T. Richardson.

Nominations for the Hospital Board were Messrs C. D. Sole, 0. E. James, D. Ma'one. and R. H. Cameron. The following soldiers were due at Stratford this evening: R. W. Hamblyn and G. Kcighley, Midhirst; C Soar, Whanuamomona; H. Kodgers, A. Stewart, find R. Reid. Stratford. There was a. splendid attendance of the public at the station, the Soldiers being eagerly spirited away by delighted friends and relatives. There was an excellent attendance at Knhouri Bridge hall last evening at the welcome home dance tendered to Privates Hann, Faulder, Tyford, and Bennett Mr. Pattinson delivered a complimentary address, congratulating them on their safe return, Private Hann responding. The floor was in fine order, the evening proving an enjoyable outing. Mr. T Lamason reports: At last week's sale poultry was in good demand. Turkeys realised from 7s to 7s 6d geese 5s to 5s Gd, gobblers Us to 13s, cockerels 2s Sd to 3s, hens 2s to *2a fid; furniture, etc., at usual auction rates. T. I. Lamason's usual weekly sale is advertised elsewhere. A large quantity of very fine fruit is to hand for auction and private sale.

Altltoflgh shipping arrangements are far from being regular or satisfactory, Mr. C. E. .Tames has been fortunate in landing some splendid sets of English china tea-sets, ranging in price from £1 18s to £2 2s Od 421 pieces). Later on, dinner and other sets are expected. Those in need of tea-sets would be well advised to call and see Mr. James' shipment, which are unique in design and the prices are unapproachable. Still a good range of ladies' hand-bags to clear. —Advt.
