SERIOUS RIOTING. MANY TOWNS AFFECTED. London, April 17. Soldiers awaiting embarkation to England, including those from Mesopotamia, will remain in India in view of tlio present situation. Advices from Calcutta, state that passive resistance demonstrations by Marwars culminated in serious rioting in the Indian quarter. Several Europeans were assaulted and officers injured. The military were called out and fired, causing a dozen casualties, and order was restored. A mob at Gurgwala, Punjab, attacked a train and wrecked a station. An aeroplane bombed the crowds. The unrest continues. At Lahore the rioters, after killing five Europeans and looting the banks, burnt the buildings and the mission church depot for the Punjab was also destroyed. A strong military force quelled the riots.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. ADDITIONAL TROOPS ARRIVE. COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY ENFORCED. BOMBAY QUIET. Received April 23, 11.5 p.m. London, April 19. The Press Bureau has issued the Viceroy's report stating that in the Punjab additional troops are arriving at Lahore, and are being distributed throughout the province. Attempted outrages have been suppressed. Commiuial responsibility of villages for the protection of the railways is being enforced. There were fifteen casualties in Friday's firing at Delhi, one being killed. The north-west frontier demonstrations proved a fiasco, Peshawar shopkeepers refusing to close their shops.
