NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE MEETING. The Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council met last night, there being present tlie Mayor (Mr- C. H. Burgess), Crs. J. Clarke, F J. Hill, W. F. Short ; E Griffiths, W. A. Collis, and G. W. Browne. It was decided to close the municipal baths as from April 30. The matter of heavy-weight carting over the borough streets during the winter months in connection with the erection of certain large buildings was considered, and it was eventually resolved to leave it to the inspector to enforce the by-laws relating thereto. A letter was received from the clerk of the Taranaki County Council, enclosing a letter from the Public Works engineer-in-chief, indicating that he was of opinion that there was no cause for anxiety in relation to the erection of the weir at the Waiwakaiho bridge. A letter-from the Milton Borough Council, suggesting combined action of all local bodies with a view to urging the Government to acquire steamships for the export of New Zealand produce, in order to relieve producers from the present high rates charged, was received. The question of urging the Government to take control of main arterial roads was brought forward by a resolution from the Palmerston Borough Council, but no action was taken. It was decided to support a resolution passed by the Patea County Council urging combined action on the part of Taranaki local bodies with the Auckland Electrie League with a view to evolving a hydro-electric scheme for the North Island, favoring the Aw v apuni site on the Waikato River for generating purposes, and to endeavor to bring the matter more forcibly under the notice of the Minister of Public Works.
