THE TONGARIRO PARK.

SCHEME OF DEVELOPMENT. It has been decided to erect an ac oomnudation hut on the western slope, of ■Mount R-.inpchu. This is one of the first definite steps taken to popularise this excellent summer and winter tourist resort, whicli includes the Tongariro National Park, near Wamiarino Mr. R M. Algie stated a few days ago that members of the Ruapeliu Ski-iug Club were very hopeful that the site of the proposed accommodation hut will become the location of the hermitage. Regarding the hut itself, last year the Government placed £SOO on the estimate? for the "development of the park.'' As part of the development scheme the Tourist Department has approved the erection of a hut and the constructipn of n portion of a road to connect the new building with the Waimarino-Toka-ann motor road, which has recently been constructed by prison labor.

The tender for the erection of the hut has been let to Mr. W. Salt, of Wanganui, who is president of the Ruapehu Ski-ing Club, an<; the work will be commenced practically immediately. A considerable portion of the work will be carried out by voluntary labor. The hut will be siiuated about 12 miles from Waimarino, and will be at an elevation of about 4000 ft., in the centre of charming bush scenery. A good water supply is close at. hand. The mountains of Ruapeliu, Ngaurnboo and Tongariro will be within walking distance, and it, will, be possible to visit one of the mountains each day. The hut will be so constructed as to hold from 15 to 20 persons in three separate rooms, so that tourist parties comprising either sex or both will he able to make use of the hut. Owing to the closing of the Waiouru-Tokaanu road, the new lint will be of special value, as it will be the only accommodation in the National Park accessible to Auckland people. It will be within 12 hours' journey of the city.
