POLITICAL STATEMENT BY MR MYERS. Bv Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Referring to the very vexed question as to whether there will be a session of Parliament before the general election takes place, the Hon. A. M. Myers states that, irrespective of general political questions, it will be absolutely necessary to pasß taxing legislation, as no land tax; can be collected until a Tax Bill has been passed. The land tax is usually made payable early in November, and the Tax Bill should be passed not later than the latter part of October to enable the Order-in-Council to be prepared and issued before the date of payment. There is also every probability of legislation being passed on the lines of the Expiring Laws Continuance Act, 1918, which extends the operation of certain enactments to August 31, 1916. The Minister added: "This aspect alone should remove any doubts that may exist regarding the holding of a session.
GERMAN ESCAPEES AT LARGE. Wellington, Last Night. On the latest advice, the German prisoners of war who escaped from Featherston internment camp on Wednesday had not been recaptured.
