THE LIQUOR POLL

PROHIBITION LEADING BY 12,195 SOLDIERS', ABSENT AND OTHER VOTES STILL TO COME Considerable interest was man ifested yesterday in the poll on the issues, national prohibition (with compensation) or continuance. The voting was very heavy, considering there was no political election to attract the voters to the poll. There were 464,037 votes cast, with Sevei'al returns still incomplete, and there are besides the soldiers'votes (estimated at from 40,000 to 45,000), and the absent voters. The chief returning officer issued the following statement of the position this morning, as it appear ed after the last result was received : Prohibition .. .v... ...••• •• • • 238,116 Continuance ; 225,921 Majority for Prohibition ..... 12,195 Absent voters will probably prove an important factor. There are three thousand seamen's votes still to come. A large nuinber of absent voters' permits were issued in every electorate—as many as 381 in one case. The estimated number of absent voters, in addition to seamen, is given unofficially as between 10,000 and 15,000. In 1914 the number of votes c ast was 504,659, and in 1911, 464, ■ 604. In the Taranaki electorates the voting was: Prohibition, 15,612; continuance, 12,794. The figures for 1914 were: Prohibition, 15,997; continuance, 14,740.

TARANAKI ELECTORATE. The feature of the polling in the Tatanaki electorate was the smoothneaß with which the voting was carried out. The arrangements made by the Returirug Officer (Mr. James Jordan) were complete in every detail. He went round all the booths in the morning and was perfectly satisfied with the manner in which the work was proceeding, the deputies carrying out their duties expeditiously and to the satisfaction of voters. Both the parties were apparently well organised, and had ensured getti. L i their supporters to the booths. In New Plymouth the cars worked under the distinctive signs of "Efficiency" and "Liberty," each set radiating from their central depot, bringing tjjje voters to the booths in a steady strfam throughout the whole day. There seems to hare been nothing in the nature of a heavy rush at any of the booths. Opinions as to the result were given according to the color of personal opinions, but when the returns began to come in it was early evident that Prohibition had received solid support. As the larger booths declared their counts the majority increased and the is3Ue was placed beyond doubt. The speed with which the returns came in from the outside booths was a tribute to the work of the staff gatheud together by the chief returning officer. By seven o'clock returns were coming in freely, and the five booths in the principal booth at the Courthouse, where a total of 19(50 votes were cast, were totalled and returned before half-past seven and the final result was announced shortly before 9 o'clock.
