BRITISH GOVERNMENT SCHEME ABOLISHING SLUM AKEAS. London, April 7. In the House of Commons Dr. Addison moved the second reading of the Housing Bill. He stated that over three million people were living in ovorcr&wded conditions, of whom 758,000 were in London. The Bill imposed the duty on local authorities of undertaking housing schemes with a Government subsidy on the basis that local authorities are not required to contribute more than is produced by the levy of a penny rate. It is estimated that 70,000 houses aie itnfit for habitation and an additional 30,000 seriously defective. A typical slum street in Shoreditch contained 29 houses, making 168 tenements, in which 733 were living. The Health Officer in Finsbury reported that out of 438 sufferers from tuberculosis 353 were compelled to share a bed or bedroom with others.

Uninhabitable houses will be condemned without compensation. Leial authorities already contemplate building 100,000 houses.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Aita.
