BOWLING.
I'AKAisAKI BANNER. WON BY PIHAMA. Banner finals were played at Stratford yesterday, and although a keen wind was blowing and a light rain fell at times, the games were concluded in good light. The semi-final was between New Plymonth and Hawera, (winners of northern and central divisions), and was closely contested throughout. Kinks skipped by Fookes and Johnson were the last to finish, and, when Johnson finished, New Plymouth were two down, Fookes wanting three to win. This he failed to do, Hodge obtaining a single, and Hawera won the right of contesting the final with Piliama by three points. In the early stages Hollard scoring heavily, running to 12 points whilst Lambie was gathering in 4, the Pihama skip being obliged to burn several heads. With four heads to go Hollard required 5 points, Lambie having forged ahead by 2 at the 10th. The 17th was favorable to Hollard, who also gained a single on the 18th, making the rink total equal, but Hawera was still requiring to make up the leeway lost by Foy's men. The 20th head saw Hollard lying 2 with a good chance, but Lanibie's last shot drew nicely and gave Pihama a single, the position at the last head being that Holaid required 4 to tie. His men made a big effort, Parkinson scoring. Lambie was satisfied to allow this and put in a block, and Hollard failing in his attempt to burn the head, was obliged to take a single and lose the banner by * points.
